Fred Morrison

Fred Morrison was, from the very beginning, immersed in the atmosphere of Uist piping. He was taught by his father, an excellent piper from the Clann Seonaidh Aonghais Ruaidh, of South Uist, whose tutoring was based wholly on the cainntearachd, a unique singing style used to teach piping, where specific notes and rhythms are given particular sounds. Equal emphasis was given to feel and technique. Fred's early musical experiences involved many visits to Uist where he was inspired by the playing of local pipers and singers. This exposure allowed Fred to develop an impeccable technique and an approach grounded on the unique feel and style of the music of Uist.

He went on to win most of the major piping competitions in Scotland, including Gold Medals at Oban and Inverness. He also obtained the MacAllan trophy at Lorient on 5 occasions. Fred has performed and recorded as a member of Clan Alba with Dick Gaughan, he also spent 3 years touring and recording with Capercaillie.

Since then, Fred has been pursuing a solo career performing with accompanists Ross Martin and Will Lamb. He is also the founder member of Gaelic music group Ceolas. Fred's natural flair and immaculate technique, along with his sincere approach, combine to create a unique and rousing performance. His playing has been described as 'almost shocking in its subtlety and brilliance'. The Scotsman.

On 'The Sound of the Sun', Fred's latest album, many of the compositions are his own. He combines poignant slow airs with a strong emphasis on the old Hebridean stepdance style.
